Death of a Salesman

I’d had the death threats, trolls, and abuse, and now into my home came the electronic advance of a registered letter, dated April 26, 2017, from the Carter-Ruck law firm of London EC4. When their email declaration of war arrived, I had no sense that Carter-Ruck was infamous, regularly known in Private Eye magazine as “Carter-Fuck.” I understand now.

I don’t think I would have cared had I known in that moment that they’d represented the most powerful people in the world, for they wrote: “We are instructed by our clients OneCoin Limited (OneCoin) and Ruja Ignatova in connection with a series of defamatory statements published by you about our clients.”

Defamatory! I’d spent months studying the material sent to me from Tim Curry in California. He was the first to show me that OneCoin, showing little faith, was the first cryptocurrency that didn’t accept cryptocurrency. He convinced me that only by widespread disclosure would OneCoin collapse and fewer people would be hurt and financially destroyed. I’d contacted all the people I could in OneCoin. I’d raised awareness like a fire brigade. When I’d finally seen the light, I’d gone back to Tim and asked for contacts, and the City of London criminal fraud experts had told me they also believed that OneCoin probably was, as Tim had so colorfully put it, “a fucking scam.”

By then I’d heard so many, many stories of the misery brought upon individuals, communities, villages in India, townships in Africa, and disadvantaged groups from America and across Australia to the Pacific Islands, where desperate people watched as the sea level rose and the earth on which their homes are built eroded. It’s an ugly metaphor that those islanders, as their past was drowned, were encouraged to put their future in OneCoin and Ruja.

All that considered, I thought any comments I’d made to be reasonable. In retrospect, I was too bloody reasonable. I wasn’t in the mood for Carter-Ruck and the following letter, which spelled out their clients’ discontent.

You should be aware:

Our clients refute all allegations that they are operating a scam or an illegal pyramid or Ponzi scheme; and

No evidence of criminal conduct has ever been put to our clients and no adverse findings of wrongful or criminal behavior has been made by any authorities. Our clients will cooperate fully with any official enquiries.

The statements which you have published, however, go way beyond what may be considered to be legitimate debate and are causing very serious harm to our clients’ business. Our clients therefore have no choice but to write to you in connection with these very serious matters.
